Motion capture data recorded at experimental motion capture workshop at CENTRO

The project explores various possibilities of expression through motion capture.

8 short videos will be developed, approximately 30 seconds each, with various concepts, tools, animation and sound techniques.

From the first chapter, it follows: Layout_01. light

Color, Emotion, Movement's first chapter emerged as an audio visual collaboration with Fabrizio Durant a.k.a. Dvrvnt, largely for taking up the collaborative work previously carried out for live concerts such as Mutek.mx + boiler room (2015), Presente Perfecto (2014, 2017), among other events.

The visual development of Layout 01. light starts from the exploration of tools such as SideFX Houdini animation and 3d rendering.

Soon we will share screenshots and the process behind each chapter.

Process

In May 2018, as part of the research I carry out in CENTRO; I invited a group of friends, architects, sound and visual artists, developers, dancers, teachers and students from the institution to participate in the first "Mocap Experimental Workshop".

(mocap as short lazy version of Motion Capture).

The objective of the workshop was to explore motion capture as a creative process in various areas, ranging from sound production, visual production, digital or object content.

Motion Capture.
First, we need to understand what is motion capture?
A series of markers or sensors placed on the actors / dancers are recognized or interpreted by various programs, to "digitize" their body movements.
CENTRO's laboratory has 24 Prime 13 cameras of the brand, optitrack, which are managed and controlled with its software called motive.

Once the information of the motion capture is clean, we develop the characters; but, since it is a "short" project, the tool make human, (open source AGPL3) was used, which with a simple graphic interface, allows you to create humanoids quickly.

layout_01. light
For this first layout, we thought about light, as a starting point both, visually and soundly.
The concept behind the animation will not be described in words, we think that it is best for each visitor to have their own version of the pieces that we will share here.

On houdini, the principle of finding the shortest path between a series of points was used, with the use of the node Find Shortest Path, which, in addition to drawing a route between points, was animated. Line growth sometimes jumps from one path to another, since the algorithm is calculated frame by frame and can find another path depending on the position of the nodes. It can be avoided, but it was decided to keep the effect.

On the sound side, Fabrizio a.k.a. Durvnt completely followed the line of motion capture video material. Based on the scoop of light and its behavior (colors).
Using the tool Ableton Live.

For the subsonic recording, he used the VST TyrellN6, from u-he, a fun, chameleonic, free-download synth.
